Singing For My Living (An Imagined Duet with Joseph Hale)

about

As I was writing songs for my latest album late last summer, my good friend Joseph Hale passed away. I had been listening to Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather" the morning I wrote this. In Dylan's song, he has a conversation with a woman, yet, he sings the whole tune on his own. In my song here, I imagined a conversation with Joseph. Joseph and I spent hours on the road, on the way to shows, discussing life and music and more. This song makes me happy while I miss him.

SINGING FOR MY LIVING (An Imagined Duet with Joseph Hale)
( 9-18-2014)

I recall the talks that you and I once had
As we were trapped on the highway so many years ago
We’d pass the time with tales and tunes that we were both into
I wonder what you’re up to now
What are you into?

Well I’m up, looking down and I’m happy after all
The face paint of the clown I was, is all behind me now
The circus is for sale, but I could not care less
Who gets the big top or benefits from it

You once said you were twisted and a somewhat tortured youth
Your teenage mind exploded as the final question was so loaded
The matters of facts were all scattered on the King’s Horse’s back
And in the end, they rode off and they never did ride back

Yes oh yes indeed the meanings ended here with me
They rode in with some calm with the dew of my first and final dawn
They stay with me through each day and the days are never-ending
Here in the land of every new beginning

How’s the music there, are you taking in the scene
I’ve heard they have the best, far beyond our earthly dreams
I’d like to make it up sometime, but can’t be in a hurry
As I’m grounded here for now and singing for my living

The sustain is forever and there’s never a wrong note
The people sing my songs and praise everything I ever wrote
And I too do sing theirs, as voices fall on hearing ears
So loudly and sincere, loudly and sincere

Well, we all do miss you, since you’ve gone away
We long to hear your voice and talk to you to your face
It’s good to know you’re good, I mean, I think I can hear you say
Don’t worry for me, I’m gonna be okay

Yes Yes, don’t worry for me, I’m gonna be okay
