    SEED
A Community Collaboration (if you please)

    SEED
As I release my 15th solo album, and Lisa and I prepare to be “empty nesters”, I believe I’ve landed on a creative way to celebrate this time in our lives. I hope this album finds us creating something together. It’s intended as a collaboration between you and me. Something that will spread, germinate, grow, flower, then go to seed, and start again. Hopefully, it’s a jumping off point for you. A kickstart for your muse. Whether you are a songwriter, poet, painter, videographer, photographer, potter, dancer, sound engineer etc. I will make the lyrics available to you, for you to manipulate, change and separate at will. The songs and melodies will be made available to sample. The audio tracks will be made available for overdubs and remixing. Grab a line or verse and write your own song or paint your own picture or write your own poem, or melody. Maybe you’ll choose to cover my song and make it your own. Let’s see where the Seed takes us, and later, let’s release our collaboration and we’ll call it,
    FLOWER.

Where Did This SEED Come From?
These songs seemed to be “handed to me” like little gifts from various sources. A few were challenges from The Song Colony*, an open group of writers who meet each month in Marietta Ohio at The Stage Door. At the end of each session, we spontaneously pick one word to use as a jumping off point for a song. We call it the “Quick and Dirty”. The assignment is to spend one hour or less on a song, and the goal is to write whatever comes to mind, without the pressure of feeling it should be precious, or a “masterpiece”. We are simply working the songwriting muscle, and as a result, happy accidents occasionally occur. Hundreds of songs have come out of this group using this method.

Other songs from Seed are playful challenges from friends. Pig came from my late friend Mark Scohy saying to me, “there aren’t enough songs about bacon”. Weed and Keep Your Clover Bloomin’ came to me while I was doing yard work, and a couple others came from words I saw in a book called 300 Drawing Prompts.

There’s no wrong or right way to approach this project. No rules, no limits.
I hope you will join us. Some have already started!

Weed 02:28
Weed All I wanna do is be a weed A weed that’s gone to seed And hope some breeze will catch my seeds ‘n blow ‘em to freedom And hour after hour Watch my flowers bloom All I wanna do is be a weed Weed that’s gone to seed Why would anyone wanna poison me Why would anybody have such spite As I hold up your hillside And I think ya oughta treat me right And hour after hour We could watch our flowers bloom All I wanna do is be a weed Weed that’s gone to seed
2.
Keep your clover bloomin’ Let your grass grow Please the bees Let it go to seed Stop the mowers and the blowers Let the snakes avoid the rakes Keep your clover bloomin’ Let your grass grow What will be in my head When I’m on my deathbed Will not be how clean cut and green My landscaping could be So I’ll keep my clover bloomin’ Let my grass grow Please the bees Let it go To Seed
3.
When Pigs Fly When pigs fly Will their sty be in the sky Will they be in cahoots With the cow who Flew over the moon Hey diddle diddle Grab your bow and fiddle Let’s jig all night Then sleep ‘til the middle of the day When that large lady sings Will it be a swan song Making ripples on the lake With reflections of our fate Hey diddle diddle Grab your bow and fiddle Let’s jig all night Then sleep ‘til the middle of the day When this banjo rings Do you hear ancient tones Singin’ in your soul Clingin’ to your marrow Hey diddle diddle Grab your bow and fiddle Let’s jig all night Then sleep ‘til the middle of the day When the saints go marchin’ in Will you be in that number Whether you be in bare feet Or fine boots of Spanish leather Hey diddle diddle Grab your bow and fiddle Let’s jig all night Then sleep ‘til the middle of the day
4.
Pig 04:33
PIG I dig a good salad But it’s got to have some fat If so, I’m down with that Give me the greens Then watch the pig in me Eat about anything I’ll belly up to what you’re makin’ Just as long as you’re packin’ bacon I’ll be makin’ the scene Just watch the pig in me This fool can’t get full I once had a little bit of money Just enough to keep me going Enough to keep me and honey happy We were doin’ just fine Enter the swine Needin’ more than I had in store I wore my warehouse down and out too Sang a tune called the Pork Rind Blues And you wouldn’t sing along Even when I begged you to This fool can’t get full So what have I learned here As I can’t shake the ham I am But if I could somehow stand In one place And place that smile back on your face I could be good with that But it would leave me wanting more As your happy makes me happy Makes things seem green Then brings the pig in me This fool can’t get full
5.
It’s a Squirrel’s World Too I’m misunderstood In this neighborhood And this hood Is all I know If I walk on this wire So high from you all And fall to my death Just let go Would you all miss me And my daily rants Would you look back And regret that you never Gave me and my kind a chance So I know I’m different And my life is spent In a tree, you believe is yours But I know my family Was here long before You and yours Were ever born They were all okay with that They took an indifferent stance Now you might look back And regret that you never Gave me and my kind a chance So call your kid off And grab that damned sling shot Then have that man to boy talk Tell him of do unto others As we should do too Like it or not As he might just miss me And my daily rants He might grow up And regret that he never Gave me and my kind a chance Don’t let him grow up And regret that he never Gave me and my kind a chance
6.
Moth Man 02:37
MOTH MAN All my days I’ve been a seeker Searching for the brightest light Afraid at night When the lights go dim Of what I might discover Or how I might remember when My darkest days were creeping in All my days I’ve been a seeker Searching for the brightest Light
7.
Asteroid (The Minor Planet) I saw your light from years ago You moved at speeds I’ll never know Now I wish upon you Before you burn out into This dark night That leaves me such doubt In your airless world Somewhere between Jupiter and Mars I’ll search for one more glimpse of you As I gaze to the stars I’ll excuse you while you kiss the sky Pardon you as you fly right by High above where no wind exists Nothing like this space and time I rent In your airless world Somewhere between Jupiter and Mars I’ll search for one more glimpse of you I’ll search for one more glimpse As I gaze to the stars I’ll hope for one more glimpse of you As I gaze to the stars
8.
The Milky Way How many stars Did it take to fill The Milky Way How many moons ago Did the Universe say Let’s leave it this way Yet how many mountains Have come and gone How many blades of grass Are you standing on Don’t stop and count All this You’ll miss Your time And there’s No Time to miss How many days Did it take To fill up Your life thus far You could quickly calculate The numbers in minutes Oh, it wouldn’t be so hard How many hairs have come and gone On your aging head How many days Did you wake Feeling like the walking dead Don’t stop and count All this You’ll miss Your time And there’s No Time to miss
9.
Don’t Listen to This Song This song is better than it sounds This song is better than it sounds The notes you hear Going down Got twisted around And around This song is better than it seems This song is better than it seems The sounds of my mouth Vibrate just fine But they don’t match up with the dreams That are in my mind So don’t listen to this song Don’t listen To this song Stop Listening to this song This verse missed your attention span This verse missed your attention span It was meant to come to your emotional rescue But you missed the cue And I missed it too This verse is only for my ears
10.
First Time Behind the Wheel There’s just no way to measure The exact amount of pleasure Or pain I gained or lost along the way My first path was dirty And it gradually got gritty But, the gravel as I’ve traveled smoothed away As a teen, I was king of all manly things A know it all who didn’t know He was new to it Now as I get down to it Lookin’ back on my youth And it Seems unreal to feel this, yet I feel It’s my first time behind the wheel My first time behind the wheel It’s my first time behind the wheel We crawl then we walk We babble then we talk We suck then we chew On the nightly news We finally make the grade Find lust Get laid If bad luck doesn’t get in our way Some first or second dates Lead us to pro-create And we rinse and repeat this All through history When we finally get a grip The grip somehow slips Then we regret what was not ours To regret It’s my first time behind the wheel My first time behind the wheel It’s my first time behind the wheel
11.
The Growing Season I’ve had my chance to spring I’ve had my chance to flower I’ve been through many seasons Gone to seed, then regained my power From months to weeks to days Of being lost every hour The growing season Found the worst of me I hope the best Isn’t lost on you This ain’t my first garden I’ve hoed many a row Turned the dirt ‘til it broke my spirit My heart, my back, my soul I’ve seen too much rain, too much drought And doubt to lift my mood The growing season Found the worst of me I hope the best Isn’t lost on you Now I could turn your dirt If I could only spot your spade I’ve got your seeds in my sweaty palm Do the nerves show on my face Man oh boy don’t sprout too soon As you’ll never make it to the bloom The growing season Found the worst of me I hope the best Isn’t lost on you I’ve known you since you were a dream Behind your mother’s eyes And the daily grind, love and sunshine Nurtured your growing mind I have no right to sing these blues So here’s to her and cheers to you
