lyrics

Our Fairy Land File
It was just another summer night in 1979
That Monkey Ward 10 speed was pedaled one last time
Brother rode it off the curb like a million times before
But the bike broke at its forks as he used a bit too much force
Over handle bars and onto concrete
Almost lost a lip as he knocked out seven teeth
This mouthy young teen became quiet as a king
As our family tugged him through this truly ugly thing

Could somebody have warned him to stay inside that night?
Then lock the door and heave the key with all their might?
Now he's stuffed it all away, in his fairly land file
And hopes it stays for a while

I was just another anxious kid in junior high
It didn't take a lot to make me feel alive inside
But a social studies teacher stripped it all away
When he tried to be my valentine after school one day
I know it's been twenty odd years and he left town long ago
And most days I regret that I can't forget and let it go
But it's been shutting my mouth for over two decades now
While wondering how many valentines he's had from town to town

Could somebody have warned me to stay at home that day?
Then lock the door and heave the key, keep everything okay?
Now I've shoved this all away in my fairly land file
And hope it stays for a while

Cousin Ben was a good guy inside with a grin and a good look
But if you had something worth taken, you'd be the one getting shook
The drinking turned to smoking and the smoking turned to snorting
And for the rest of his days there was nothing good worth reporting
He drove down to Atlanta looking for something a bit more green
But his head down there was dead, diseased with kudzu and weed
He ended up dying by getting beat up by a teen
Over a bottle in a brown bag while hanging out in his home-less sweet street

Somebody should have asked him to come inside that night
Freed him from the street, relieve him of that fight
Now we've tucked this all away in our fairly land file
And hope it stays for a while

But one day I know it's bound to blow
One day the tears just gotta flow flow flow
Then I'll be telling you not to hold it all in
All that's screwing you
All that makes you blue
